How do I use Essential Oils?
There are several ways to use essential oils. Here are some of our favorites:
Direct Application
- Apply neat (in the essential oil world, NEAT means directly on the skin) directly to the skin on location.
- Oils penetrate the skin. Rapid absorption delivers benefits throughout the body the body within minutes.
- When trying new oils, always test a small area of skin before applying over the body.
Direct Inhalation
- Put several drops into the palms of your hands, rub together, or put on a tissue or cotton ball.
- Cup your hands over your nose and mouth,
- Breathe deeply.
Massage
- Mix 10 – 12 drops (5 for children) of your favorite essential oils with one ounce of Message Oil.
- If you choose to use a carrier oil other than Message Oil, be sure that it’s a high quality, pure organic carrier oil.
Foot Rubs
- Apply 1 – 2 drops of selected essential oil to the reflexology points of the feet.
- Or mix 10 – 12 drops (5 for children) of your selected essential oils with one ounce of Message Oil. Of you choose to use a carrier oil other than TRUessence Message Oil, be sure that it’s a high quality, pure organic carrier oil.
- Most people aren’t aware that the feet have the largest pores of the body, and the largest concentration of pores in the body – so use of essential oils on the feet can be particularly effective.
NOTE: TRUessence Essential Oils essential oils are particular favorites of Reflexologists, Vita Flex Therapists, and Foot Zoners. We hear from them that they often only use a drop or two of our oil, compared to using 5 – 6 drops of competing oil. This makes the use of TRUessence Essential Oils essential oils more cost efficient, and also supports the practitioner’s treatment in being more effective for their client.

- Some essential oils create an environment that is unfriendly to germs and bacteria.
- Some favorites include Lemon, Peppermint, Tea Tree and Spice of Life.
Are there any cautions I should be aware of when using essential oils?
Definitely. At times, a skin rash or break out on location may occur. If it does, discontinue use of the oil for a few days, and then try again. The location where the rash or skin eruption has occurred can be calmed by rubbing Message Oil or an equally high quality organic carrier oil.
Additionally, when using hot, spicy oils such as Oregano, Thyme ct. thymol, Lemongrass, Defense, or Spice of Life, we recommend that you dilute them with TRUessence Message Oil or a high quality organic carrier oil when using.
In fact, we don’t recommend that you use TRUessence Oregano or Thyme ct. thymol oils unless they are diluted at least 1 part to 10 of carrier oil. These oils are very hot to the skin, and should always be diluted when using.
If I break out with a rash or little bumps when I use an essential oil, does that mean I’m allergic to it?
Not necessarily. Because the skin is the largest eliminative organ of the body, it is also one of the easiest to trigger a detoxification response from. Because TRUessence Essential Oils are 100% pure and undiluted, they may trigger a detoxification response. If this occurs, stop the use of the essential oil, drink lots of clean, pure water, and let your body ‘rest’ from the use of your essential oils for a few days, then try again. If you have experienced a break out of a rash, or little bumps, it’s a good idea to calm them by applying Message Oil or a high quality organic carrier oil on location.
We have noticed that if one has taken a lot of prescription medications, they can tend to detoxify quickly, and it is often through the skin. So be aware, and be responsibly cautious when using 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils.
Are there any essential oils that should not be used when pregnant?
Some essential oils contain constituents with hormonal-like action or other properties which are not recommended for use during pregnancy. These include Basil, Cedarwood, Cinnamon Bark, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Coriander, Fennel, Jasmine, Marjoram, Oregano, Peppermint, Thyme ct. thymol, and Rosemary.
Moon blend may be safely used in moderation as long as recommended amounts are not exceeded or overdosed.
What about using essential oils with infants or children? Is it safe?
It is certainly safe to use essential oils with infants or children, always using the essential oils responsibly.
We suggest that when using the oils with infants, that you always dilute the chosen essential oil. Recommended proportions would be 1 – 2 drops of selected essential oil to 1 Tablespoon of Message Oil or high quality organic carrier oil.
When using essential oils with children, a good ratio of essential oil to Message Oil would be 1 – 4 drops of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of Message Oil or high quality organic carrier oil.
RESPONSIBLE CAUTION FOR CITRUS OIL USAGE:
When using citrus oils such as Lemon or Orange, or a blend that is high in citrus oils, such as Charity oil, avoid exposure of the areas where the oils were applied, to direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight can trigger a change in skin pigmentation (you might look like you have a bruise on the area), or a slight rash. Although it’s not harmful, it can be socially inhibiting.
