Uses: Often called 'Nature's Prozac' in the aromatherapy world, studies have shown that Bergamot can be a significant aid in balancing the emotions and enhancing treatments for depression and anxiety-related conditions. Soothing and grounding to those overly stimulated or anxious; a great sleep tonic. Uplifting and stabilizing to individuals suffering from depression. Diffusion or inhalation will not only support emotional balance, it is a natural deodorant and disinfectant; research indicates its value in purifying the air and relieving adverse effects created by the presence of tobacco smoke.

Bergamot is the source of the delightful and enticing flavor of Earl Gray tea and is used extensively in many foods and beverage. Of benefit to all manner of infections and helps reduce fever. Excellent as a mouthwash or gargle to ease mouth ulcers, sore throat, bad breath, tonsillitis. Stimulant to stomach, spleen, and liver; a drop added to green tea makes a pleasant anti-inflammatory and detoxifying tonic to aid esophagitis, gastritis, ulcers, colitis, constipation, parasites, urinary disorders.

Balancing to skin; may be helpful with a variety of skin problems including prematurely aging skin, oily skin and hair, acne, cold sores, skin infections, psoriasis, eczema, rashes, and insect bites. Historically used in fragrances, lotions, and cosmetics.

Aroma: Fresh, sweet, citrus spice with a floral note

Properties: Analgesic, antidepressant, antiparasitic, antiseptic (lungs; genitourinary tract), antispasmodic, antitussive, carminative, digestive, diuretic, deodorant, antipyretic, anti-diarrheal, stimulant, stomachic, tonifier, vermicide, vulnerary.

Application: Use in moderation on skin or blend with Jojoba Message Oil; excellent addition to the bath with TRUessence Dead Sea Salt. (See caution below concerning sun exposure when using Bergamot on skin.) Apply a drop or two as personal fragrance or to calm stress and improve mood. Diffuse or inhale a few drops from a tissue. Listed GRAS. Add a drop or two to water and use as mouthwash or gargle. Add a drop to honey and stir into green tea for a pleasant and therapeutic tonic.

Responsible Cautions: As with most citrus oils, Bergamot increases photosensitivity of the skin. Do not use on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or ultraviolet light within 72 hours.
