Uses: Not to be confused with the Sweet Orange tree (Citrus sinensis), which yields an amazing essential oil in its own right, the Bitter Orange tree (Citrus aurantium) produces three different essential oils: Bergamot, from the rind of the fruit; Neroli, from the tree's blossoms; and Petitgrain, which is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the tree. Each essential oil possesses its own unique qualities while sharing some common properties.

Petitgrain has been used traditionally for its effectiveness with oily skin and hair and has an overall toning action, with a beneficial effect on facial edema as well. It also has deodorizing ability and is useful in combating excessive perspiration.

This is a strengthening and stabilizing oil, with nervine and calmative properties which provide it the ability to relax and soothe the nervous system and ease depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. It is helpful in relieving insomnia and is supportive in times of nervous exhaustion or other stress disorders, and strengthening when recuperating from illness. It is also of benefit with hypertension and rapid heartbeat, and can be of benefit when recuperating from illness.

The digestive abilities of Petitgrain can provide relief from indigestion, constipation and stomach distress, particularly when of an emotional origin. It may be of benefit with respiratory complaints as well, easing breathing, relaxing spasms, and calming asthma of a nervous origin.
